HISTORIC NEFYN

Nefyn is an uncommercialised historic little town, famous in the past for its shipbuilding and its herring fleet. It's sheltered little harbour - Porth Nefyn - with its quay and cluster of whitewashed cottages at the water's edge, still provides shelter for a handful of small, local fishing boats.

The borough emerged late in the I2th or early in the I3th century on what must have been one of the largest manors of the Princes of Gwynedd, and work on manorial buildings is recorded in I306-7. Some of its street and place names echo its important past e.g. Stryd y Plas (Palace Street), Bryn Mynach (Monks Hill). Visited by Edward I in I284, it was the scene of a 'Round Table' or jousting tournament celebrating his conquest of Gwynedd. A group of fields extending from below Iorwerth Villa towards Capel Seion (about 300 yds. N.-S. by 80 yds., with a steep bank on the W., centre at SH 30774027) is now known as Cae Iorwerth ('Edward's Field') and are accepted locally as the scene of the tournament. In the Tithe Award Schedule of I838-42 these fields formed part of a larger area named Cae Thomas and contained a rope-walk which may have been the cause of artificial leveling. In I833 its supposed location was given as a circular earthwork near the Edern road, but no trace of this remains.

There is documentation of work on manorial buildings in 1306-7,but the only surviving structure earlier than the I8th century, however, is a small motte, Y Twr (situated just behind the Indian restaurant) although there is no evidence that the town was ever fortified.

After being bestowed the Royal Charter in 1355 by the Black Prince, Nefyn gained "town" status, and soon became an important centre on the Peninsula. Such was the volume of herring landed by the fleets of small boats here, that the surplus was used as fertilizer. The fish were sold in threes (mwrw), hence the three herrings on the coat of arms. There are still buildings called Tai Halen (Salt Houses) in Stryd Y Plas and to this day other inhabitants of Lleyn sometimes refer to people from Nefyn as Penwaig Nefyn (Herrings of Nefyn)! More information about the herring fleet can be found here.

The weather vane that sits atop St Mary's church (later developed into a maritime museum but is no longer open to the public) is in the shape of a ship, again testament of Nefyn's seafaring past.

Another landmark of historical note is Ffynnon Fair (St. Mary's Well) an ancient well in the centre of the town.
