RHIW: A BRIEF HISTORY There is evidence of an early settlement in the form of the Bryngaer hill fort, and two burial dolmens, and on the north eastern side of Mynydd Rhiw there is the site of the stone age axe head 'factory'. Some of the axe heads from this rock have been found as far afield as the southern counties of England. Manganese was discovered at Ffrwd Y Nant in 1827, and was mined here during both world wars. The ore was shipped out of Ports Ysgo from the jetty after being transported down inclines from the mines above. The works were in use since the mid nineteenth century and the remains of the barracks can be seen today. Now owned by the National Trust, Plas Yn Rhiw is a delightful manor house which was rescued from neglect and lovingly restored by the three Keating sisters, who bought it in 1938. The house is 16th-century with Georgian additions, and the garden contains many beautiful flowering trees and shrubs, with beds fr RHIW TODAY: To the south-east of Mynydd Rhiw lies Porth Neigwl, or Hells Mouth, an impressive south-west facing, four-mile long bay popular with surfers and kayakers. A gently shelving beach, consisting mainly of medium sized pebbles at high tide but with vast expanses of sand, it is one of the best-known surf spot in north Wales. Often deserted, the beach at Porth Ysgo is an almost hidden bay situated between Rhiw and Aberdaron. Accessed via a hundred or so steps, and quite hard to find as there are no clearly defined parking areas, it is well worth a visit. On the South side of the bay, there is a myriad of old mine workings, and to the west of the bay is Porth Cadlan. Here and on the fields above it, King Arthur is thought to have fought his thirteenth battle. To get there head from Rhiw towards Aberdaron and turn off when you see the sign for Porth Ysgo. When you come to a farm with a small pond, the car park is on the right.
